McPherson State Fishing Lake adjoins the 2,574 acre Maxwell Wildlife Refuge, which offers viewing of bison and elk in a native prairie setting. The 46-acre lake is surrounded by 260 acres of campground and public use area. The lake is characterized by a steep rocky shoreline towards the dam and shallow mud flats on the upper end. A boat launch facility is located on the west side of the lake. Boating on the lake is for fishing only. Primitive camping is also permitted and fire rings/grills, picnic tables, and pit toilets are available. For visitors who prefer not to rough it, McPherson State Fishing Lake offers a 16' x 27' deluxe cabin with air conditioning/heat, open to visitors year-round. This cabin is handicapped-accessible. It has one full bathroom, one bedroom with a full size bed, and a futon. In the living area, there is a sofa and a single murphy bed. There is a kitchen complete with stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and filters, toaster, dishes, utensils, and pots and pans. Outside amenities include a covered porch, picnic table, and fire ring. It is a short walk to the water's edge and a hiking trail that starts just south of the cabin. Vehicles are permitted on maintained roads and in designated parking areas. Vehicle permits are not required at McPherson State Fishing Lake. You must be 18 or older to rent a cabin or campsite. A non-refundable reservation fee is charged for each transaction. Reservations must be made at least 3 days prior to arrival. No tent, trailer, or RV camping is allowed at the cabin site. All dishes should be clean and put away. A trash dumpster is located near the west entrance to the lake. Trash should be taken to the dumpster before checking out. Staff will inspect the cabin after you leave and additional charges may be applied for cleaning, missing items, or damages.
